What is UHISA?
The UHI Students’ Association (UHISA) exists to further enhance the student experience of everyone studying at UHI. This is achieved by representing students’ needs on a variety of UHI committees and by helping to create and develop a diverse range of social activities for students.
All UHI students (those who study at HNC, HND, degree or postgraduate level within UHI) automatically become members of UHISA at the point at which they enroll. This means that they are entitled to stand and vote in UHISA elections, be active members of UHISA affiliated Clubs and Societies and take part in most activities which are organized by UHISA.
How is UHISA run?
The Association is run by the members of the UHISA Executive Committee, a body comprising of elected individuals, each representing one of UHI’s partner institutions plus two student officer posts; President and a Vice President. It is the President and Vice President who take responsibility for running UHISA affairs on a day-to-day basis. Although a relatively small group of students, the Executive Committee is held accountable by the UHISA Student Council. The Student Council is a larger group of students who help the Executive Committee make decisions which effect what UHISA is and what UHISA does, and there are a number of different ways for students to get involved in either of these important groups.
What about Elections?
One of the most important elements of democracy in any students’ association or union is the election process. This provides the opportunity for students to nominate themselves for available positions within the Association, and offers the student body the chance to vote for the candidate(s) they would like to see represent them. It is also an opportunity to air any other issues, relating to their education or otherwise, which a student might have.
