UHI Golf Team

The UHI Golf Team, made up students studying on the BA (Hons) Golf Management degree at North Highland College in Dornoch have had their most successful representation at the Scottish Universities Golf Championships for a number of years at the event played over the week 27th March to 1st April.

The team consisted of seven first year, two second year and two third year students. This meant that for most of the team, this was their first experience of the event and to top-end student golf competition.

To start the week two of the team made the 36-hole cut to be in the top half of the field in the individual strokeplay event. One of these players was first year, Scott Whyte, making the cut in his first individual Scottish Universities individual Order of Merit event.

The matchplay competition began on the Wednesday and UHI where matched up against Heriot Watt University. The format of the matches was five foursomes matches in the morning, followed by ten singles matches. The match was tied at 2 ½ - 2 ½ after the foursomes. The UHI team then put in a great performance through the middle order of the singles matches to win the match 8 ½ - 6 ½ overall. Team Captain, Neil Marc winning his point with a chip-in from the side of the 17th green, followed by Vice-captain Jamie Fraser holing a 30-foot putt on the same green to go 1-up and guarantee the match overall.

The win over Heriot Watt led to a semi-final match against Aberdeen University. Aberdeen had an experienced team that included three R&A Bursars. The UHI team competed well but trailed 3 ½ - 1 ½ at lunch time. The afternoon matches proved equally tough, with many of the Aberdeen team playing sub-par golf. The final score was 10 ½ - 4 ½ to Aberdeen. The score does not reflect how close the match was overall and the performance of some of UHI’s first years was impressive throughout.

Two of the UHI team certainly deserve mention for their performance in the matchplay. Second year Alex Shedden and first year Ross Black both scored three points from their four matches played over the two days. John Mackinnon, another first year also gained 2 ½ points from his four matches having lost his first match.

Alan Fleming, Team Coach, PGA Professional and golf management lecturer for North Highland College reports that “The team performed well during the week and there are a lot of positives they can take forward. They are a young team and the experience gained will certainly benefit them going forward. They went in quite positive but perhaps a little unsure of the level of competition they were to face. They are certainly more confident know in their ability to compete. They were also a pleasure to work with during the week. The team spirit was good this year and they were positive even after a loss. The UHI Golf Team is performing well and when you consider the size of the pool of students in comparison to some of the other teams, the strength of our team is quite impressive. The students all play and practice regularly as part of their programme of study as well as for recreation and competition. This helps them develop a good level of consistency and competitive spirit.”

The Golf Team is grateful for the continued support of UHISA student association and the much appreciated support shown by Royal Dornoch Golf Club and Neil Hampton, their new Club Manager as well as Willie MacKay, clubgolf Regional Manager for the Highlands.
