What does the Executive Committee do?

by Amy last modified 2008-03-09 14:23

There are many ways in which the Executive Committee try to positively affect the student experience, so we have provided the following basic information to help explain the different aspects of what we do.

Meetings

Each month the Executive Committee holds a meeting using the UHI Video-Conferencing equipment. This means we don't have to meet face-to-face to discuss our business (which would be costly and time-consuming, though probably a lot of fun).

The business that is discussed at each of the monthly meetings is minuted - that is to say that a record of what is said and what has been agreed will be written up and kept on file, so that we can always refer back to things that happened at previous meetings. The minutes of each of our meetings will also be put on the website soon, so that folk can find out what we've been up to.

Funding

As we've already mentioned, UHISA receives funding from the UHI Board of Governors each year that is to be spent on developing the student experience. That money goes directly to the Executive Committee, who then make decisions about how that money is spent.

Each year the Committee allocates funding under different budget headings, such as 'Clubs & Societies', 'Marketing/Advertising', and so on. This means we have to prioritise the things that we think are most important to achieve through the course of the year.

Elections

Elections are an important factor in any students' union/association and we want to make sure that all members of the Executive Committee have been fairly and impartially elected to their posts.

Annual Elections for the Executive Committee positions are held each spring (normally in April), with By-Elections being held each year in the autumn (normally in October) to fill any posts which were not filled at the time of the Annual Election.

Look out for information that will be put on the website soon, which will help you to find out more about standing for election this spring!

Constitution

Having a UHISA Constitution helps guide us through our work, as it sets out the rules and regulations for everything we need to be responsible for (including the nitty-gritty of the things mentioned above). It is probably the most important document that UHISA has - it is what helps us to be as effective and as democratic as we can! To download the consitution, please click here.

Support

Around the UHI network there are many staff members who provide advice and support which helps to encourage student activity (both on a local and UHI-wide level), though the majority of them do not do this as part of their job remit. In UHISA we are lucky to have access to a dedicated UHI Student Support and Development Team, who liaise with the Executive Committee regularly, in order to help us run the Association as efficiently and democratically as possible. Our closest link is with Emma Corbett, the UHI Student Development Officer, who has a specific role in working with us on a daily basis. If you would like to know more about staff support for student activities, please contact either Emma or myself (President@uhisa.org.uk) for information or advice.
